Look at Things With a Different Eye

Dear Brides, This Chapter 16 Making the Most of Sewing can inspire you.  Do not be AFRAID of sewing. Give it a try.  Most of it is fairly simple and can be accomplished with a few tries.  Others can be learned if you SG to send you some help! You can do this, and it could be a great blessing to you and others!

The Israelites, all the men and women, whose heart moved them to bring material for all the work, which the LORD had commanded through Moses to be done, brought a freewill offering to the LORD. Exodus 35:29

What a blessing to have a skill that the LORD will use!

I used to be afraid to sew.  It might have been because my mother did not sew at all, and by the time we had Home Ec in middle school, many of the girls had a real skill from their mothers and grandmothers and I knew nothing.  Plus the teacher was not encouraging at all. I foolishly compared myself to others.

For some reason, though, I kept sewing that summer and ended up making multiple things out of the same two patterns. Like Erin said, the more you use the same pattern, the better you get at it! I was able to make the few dollars I earned into many extra outfits that were just as I liked them.

When I was having my first baby, we had almost no money.  With love, I sewed the whole baby crib set, including a canopy and bumpers (I know--bumpers are a no-no in cribs today!), sheets, comforter and matching wall hangings.  For very little money, I had a cute nursery! I was not super-skilled, but those items were mostly rectangles and very easy!

I got away from sewing over the next busy years, but I was able to easily repair items and thus pass down items to siblings.  My children never had a problem with hand-me-downs, even when I was married with a husband with a good salary. I believe it is the attitude of the mother that influences children's like/dislike of hand-me-downs.  (Also--if the clothes were well-cared-for and still are stain-free and nice!)

It is a wonderful thing to be able to bless your family, not only to save money but also to make things fit right and be special!

I have a broken sewing machine right now that my daughter would like for me to have repaired.  She enjoys sewing, so I need to get that done for her. I am SG re: where to take it for it to be done well.

I want to encourage my daughters to sew.  The youngest likes it very much. The older two are more reluctant.  Perhaps the Lord will lead me to somehow encourage them.

My Love,  I did try to influence the private school my children attended to have Home Ec, but it was not successful.  🙁 However, I did not ask YOU to influence them. (sigh) LORD, I ask You now...please influence many schools to VALUE and provide Home Economics education again.  (Shop, too!) Those skills are lacking in many parents, and those skills can be used for a lifetime!

Holy One, help me to see the needs and to take those needs to YOU.  I do not know the mystery of how such prayer works, You already know the need.  But I long to act and pray as You would have me do! Change my heart and mind Love, and help me to always take all burdens and concerns to You!

I have truly enjoyed reading this workers@home book.  It is NOT like many other books on caring for the home.  It encourages you to look at things with a different eye--one that always relies upon our Heavenly Love!
